The first generation Webkinz do not have a “W” embroidered on their paw, while all the newer generation ones do. Webkinz also make trading cards.

You can tell when a new toy or fad is going to lead to something collectible by checking out auction prices on eBay. Brand new retail prices are around $12 or $15. Remember, there is a secret code on the tag that allows you to care for the pet in the virtual Webkinz world, so finding a retired pet with the tag and code still in place is a real treat and on eBay that can cost you an extra $10.

If you like Webkinz, collecting them and keeping the tags and codes in place is the best way to keep them valuable. When the toy retires and there is no other way to adopt a beagle, some parents and kids may be willing to pay extra cash to get one. Ganz is smart in retiring pets after a time as that can increase demand, and the addition of trading cards makes some collectors believe that Webkinz toys are a good investment.
